About Essentia

We’re a friendly bunch of ex-fund managers, neuroscientists and software developers who are breaking new ground in the world of behavioural science in finance. We help fund managers generate measurably better investment performance by providing them with data-driven feedback, combined with coaching - just like professional athletes use.

 

Over the last few years, we have increased our client base five-fold and seen significant overseas expansion. We now occupy state-of-the-art offices in London and New York (and happily offer remote working), we’re doubling our business year-on-year and we now count many of the top investment managers in the world as our clients. 

 

Along the way, we’ve built a unique company culture based on respect, authenticity and collaboration. The company and our team have numerous awards and have been featured widely in the press. Most recently, we were named the 11th Best UK Small Tech Company Workplace by Great Places to Work - and that was on our first try.

 

A month ago, we received a major strategic investment and we are now looking to put that money to work, by significantly growing our team and “levelling up,” as an organisation. We’re ready to spend more energy on attracting and retaining the people who make Essentia such an exciting place to work, and are ready to go to the next level of our cultural journey, led by you, as our Head of People and Culture.

The Role

With significant growth on the horizon, Essentia is looking for a hands-on Head of People & Culture with the passion, creativity and energy to ensure we attract, develop and retain the very best talent in the market. In the next twelve months, we are looking at doubling in size to over 50 employees, as well as growing our specialist contractor team, and we are determined to not only preserve our culture, in so doing, but to provide our team with the training and support they need to do an excellent job as they grow as people. 


In this role, you will be responsible for creating and executing on a world-class framework comprised of best practises in talent attraction, talent management and talent development. Diversity and fair practice will be at the heart of what you do.  


This role is about identifying what we already do well, and building on it, identifying areas for improvement, and helping us improve, as well as scale. You will work closely with our (female) Founder, who cares deeply about our culture and organisational development, our Operations team, who manage HR day-to-day, and our line managers to consolidate our people practises into one function, for which you will be responsible. 

You will be supported by our existing Operations team, but in time, the expectation is that you will build a team of your own, and, at the right stage in our future growth, join our Executive Management team.


Essentia has flexible working in its DNA. While this role is assigned to our London HQ, you may work from anywhere in the UK, so long as you are at our London or NY office at regular intervals. We are open to considering more seasoned candidates who are interested in working part-time.


Requirements

The person we’re looking for will have: 

  • The ability to understand how talent management and development fits into our larger corporate goals and both craft and execute an appropriate strategy.
  • Significant experience of developing employee onboarding processes
  • Significant experience of developing performance and career development programs, including detailed subject-matter training programs 
  • Experience in mentoring managers in HR and talent management best practice
  • Building and delivering leadership training programs
  • Experience in designing and executing an employer branding strategy, including careers site and social media content and policies.
  • Experience in recruitment, both internal and agency-led
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in partnering and upwardly-managing at senior management level
  • High interpersonal sensitivity and ability to influence people
  • A natural focus on process, continuous improvement and the use of data to provide evidence in decision making.
  • Knowledge and experience of HR best practises - CIPD level 5 qualification is preferred.


Prior experience of any of the following would be helpful:

  • FreshTeam, Workable, BambooHR, TalentLMS, 15Five.
  • A strong understanding of the finance and investment industry.
  • Working for a transatlantic firm with UK and US offices.
  • Working for a tech “scale-up”.Experience working for a Python-based tech firm or fintech firm.
